    Thirteenth Lake and Peaked Mountain

When you’ve hiked almost every popular trail within an hour of the Capital Region, it’s hard to find new places to explore. There are still plenty of mountains in the Southern Adirondacks that I still want to climb. The problem is that the drive is usually 2 hours or so. On Wednesday Jordan and I drove up to Johnsburg. Located near Gore Mountain, about 1.5 hours north, is Peaked Mountain, a 3.5 mile hike one way that begins at the pristine Thirteenth Lake. The trail itself starts at Beach Road (boat launch at Thirteenth Lake) in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. There are a number of primitive campsites along this trail right…

Shipyard Maine Coast Marathon and 39.3 Challenge

So where did I leave off? Oh right, I was about to run a marathon! My friend Kristin was running the full also and she had her eyes on a PR! (Spoiler alert: she crushed it!) My goal: to not get swept off the course and finish under the cut off time. The race started at 7:30 at the Kennebunk High School, only a three minute drive from our motel. Jordan dropped me off and I met up with Kristin to wish her luck. The day was a lot cooler and more cloudy than Saturday. Thank goodness, because it was perfect marathon running weather. I was on the fence about what…

    What I’m Loving Right Now

Happy Easter! I hope everyone is having a nice holiday.  I haven’t done a “what I’m loving” post in a while-so here you go! And since it is now officially Spring, my favorite flowers are in season, Ranunculus. Trader Joe’s had them on Friday and I couldn’t help but buy two bouquets. With marathon training in full swing again, I’m a big fan of listening to music when running. I’ve been doing my long runs solo, so I depend on Spotify to get me through! There is a specific station for running. You begin your run and your phone keeps track of your steps per minute. Spotify then adjusts the…

Winter Hike: Cat and Thomas Mountain Preserve

If you are looking for a nice hike not too far from the Albany area, check out Cat and Thomas Mountains in Bolton Landing, near Lake George. It’s about an hour from Albany and the hike itself is pretty easy! The trail follows an old road for a while, and eventually re-routes into the woods for a little bit. It is a gentle incline. There wasn’t much snow on the ground, but the trail was covered in ice! Thank goodness for microspikes! We took the yellow trail to the summit of Cat Mountain first. The summit is expansive and has great views of Lake George! We ate a snack and…
